Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the best national parks in Uganda with great wilderness areas that harbor unique wildlife species that cannot be found anywhere in Uganda. It was gazetted as a national park in 1962. Kidepo Valley National Park is situated in Kaabong district northeastern part of Uganda and lies in the semi-arid valleys between Uganda’s border with Kenya and Sudan hence consists of semi-arid climate with one rainy season per year which is from April to August.

Kidepo Valley National Park consists of open tree savannah vegetation, mountain forest which dominates some of the high places like along the Lorupei River which supports acacia forest and the park’s landscape is surrounded with small hills; Inselbergs and rocky outcrops hence have great scenic views. Kidepo valley national park is a home of 77 mammal species with 28 species endemic to Kidepo region, 470 bird species with 17 species endemic to only Kidepo valley national park. The park consists of two rivers namely Kidepo and Narus which are seasonal in nature in that they disappear during the dry season leaving pools for the wildlife to survive on.

Getting There

By Road: Most visitors drive from Murchison Falls which takes 7 hours or less on the sealed road. Some visitors choose to break up the journey by spending a night near Sipi Falls. Kampala is located 571km from Kidepo. The 10-hour drive from Kampala via Gulu and Kitgum is a demanding journey and few people choose this route.

By Air: Kidepo is serviced by a couple of light aircraft companies flying into the airstrip close to Apoka. These flights only operate on certain days and require a guaranteed number of passengers to fly, or small groups traveling, but is not so bad for families or larger groups. Don’t let it put you off though: there is something very special about flying out of Entebbe, circling over the drama of Murchison Falls, before pressing on to the expanse of Kidepo.

Attractions at Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo is Uganda’s third largest National Park, and only Queen Elizabeth National Park contains greater biodiversity.

Wildlife:

Kidepo is home to 77 mammal speciesand the park offers great opportunities for game viewing. 20 species of predator are present, including lion, leopard, and spotted hyena.

In Uganda, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, cheetah, and caracal are endemic to Kidepo. The elephant population is over 650(up from 200 in the mid ‘90s), buffalo are estimated to exceed 10,000 and there are over 50 Rothschild’s giraffes, an internationally important population. Zebras graze on the plains and both greater and lesser kuduroam around the thick bush. Fortunate adventurers may even see a white-eared kob, more commonly seen in South Sudan and Ethiopia.

The bird list currently numbers 470 species. 60 of these are recorded in no other national park in Uganda. East Africa’s population of Clapperton’s francolin and the rose-ringed parakeet are found only in Kidepo. There are 56 species of raptor, and the park’s vultures are thriving. Kidepo is also the only place in Uganda where bird enthusiasts can encounter the majesty of the Common Ostrich.

Narus Valley: This is located in Karamoja region and consists of grassland plain enclosed by the distant mountain. This valley harbours permanent water where the wildlife in the park drinks water from especially during the dry season. The Narus valley is a great area for game drives where you will be able to view animals like buffaloes, Oribi and many others.

Namamukweny Valley: This valley is located in north-western part of the park and is inhabited by lager number of birds such as the White Crested Turaco, Greenwood hoopoe, Common bulbul, purple heron, Clapper ton’s Francolin among other.

Kanangorok Hot Springs: These hot springs lay 11km in the northern part of Kidepo River on the Sudan border with Uganda. They are considered to have healing powers and also offer beautiful views of the mountains and clean rocks seen beneath the water springs.

Mount Morungule: This mountain range stands 2750m high and is located in the southern boundary. Mount Morungule is crossed by Kidepo River and Narus River hence good for nature walks and habits the IK people on the slopes.

Lomej Hills: These are hills found near the headquarters and harbour bird species and animals hence great for wildlife viewing and birding.

Lonyili Mountains: These are mountains that are covered in montane forest and they lie between Kitgum and Sudan border. Lonyili Mountains harbour primates such as black and white colobus monkeys, red monkeys among others.

Apoka Tourism Centre: This is a tourism hub in Kidepo valley national park where the park guides are stationed to offer game drives and nature walks to visitors on a safari in Kidepo, visitors without transportation will hire safari vehicles from the tourism centre, harbours the luxurious Apoka lodge, Craft shop with souvenirs, food and great views of the Narus valley with great wilderness areas that harbor unique wildlife species that cannot be found anywhere in Uganda. 

Activities at Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo has quite a number  of activities that travelers can engage in when they visit the park including;

  • Day Game Drive: Kidepo valley national park is a popular destination for game viewing which is done on game drives with a pop-up roof Uganda safari vehicle. Game drives can either be done early morning at 6 am or late evening at 4 pm when the animals are active, game drives in Kidepo valley national park are done in the open savannah vegetation, grassland vegetation, Narus valley among others which harbour different animal species such as Antelopes, Zebras, Beisa Oryx, Monkeys, Bushbucks, Bush duikers, Waterbucks, Elephants, Bush pigs, Warthogs, Buffaloes, Giraffes among others.
  • Night Game Drives: Kidepo national park is one of the national parks that offer visitors on a safari an opportunity to view nocturnal animals and those which they might have missed during the day game drive. Night game drives in Kidepo national park are done after dinner with a guide and spotlight torches for clear views of the nocturnal animals for example the predators including the lions, leopards, cheetahs, hunting dogs, bush babies, bat-eared fox, white tailed mongoose, small cats, spotted hyenas among others hence making your safari memorable.
  • Nature walk & Hiking: This is an activity where visitors move on foot with an armed guide within the open flat savannah plains and grasslands in Kidepo national park, walk into the Lamoj hills where they will spot wildlife species, hike to Kanangorok hot springs a natural spa in kidepo wilderness and the hot springs are usually occupied by local people in that the waters are referred to have healing powers, walk through the Kidepo valley sands during the dry season when Kidepo river has dried up. Hiking in Kidepo valleys National Park is also done in Namamukyeny Valley which is a quiet, lonely place with many bird species hence good for birding and relaxation, Hiking at Morungole Mountains to visit the IK people which is one of the smallest ethnic groups in Uganda with a unique culture nature walks in the Narus valley to see animals drinking water among others. Hiking is an adventurous and exciting activity in Kidepo valley national park in that visitors will be able to view different bird species and animals at a close range and also relaxes your mind.
  • Bird Watching: Kidepo valley national park harbors 470 bird species of which 14 species are endemic to Kidepo and the Karamoja region hence known as a birders paradise for bird lovers.  Bird watching activity usually starts in the morning at Apoka rest camp and also drive to Narus River, Namamukweny Valley among others which are great birding spots in Kidepo national park where visitors will be able to view rare bird species such as ostriches which is the heaviest and is only found in Kidepo and Kori bird which is the largest and other species such as Yellow-billed shrike, Silver birds, Broad-tailed Warblers, Black coucal, Crimson ramped waxbill, Verreaux’s eagle, Yellow-billed hornbill, Egyptian vulture, Kori bustard, Pygmy Falcon, Karamoja Apalis, Jackson’s hornbill, African mostached among others.
  • Cultural Encounters: This is an activity where the visitors visit the neighboring villages to learn their lifestyle and way of life
  • Visit the Karamojong Village, an interesting village with good people. The Karamojong are warrior nomads who rare a lot of cattle and also participate in subsistence farming. They live in an arid region where they walk long distances to get water and the place sometimes gets floods during the rainy season and drought during the dry season hence making them migrate with their cattle in search of water and pasture during the dry seasons and construct temporary structures wherever they go. During your interaction with the Karamojong you will see their traditional homesteads similar to those of the Masaai in Kenya and Tanzania, instruments such as knives, stools, arrows, spears, see their unique dress code, beads, visit art and craft shops at the entrance of the park, enjoy entertainments from the groups such as Nyangia ethnic group, Laka Karaka, Emuya of Naporre which entertains visitors through dance, music, drama performances among others.
  • Visit the IK people, these inhabit on the slopes of Mount Morungole hence takes 8 hours to climb the mountain and visit the IK tribe which is one of the original tribes in the northeastern part of Kidepo valley national park. The IK tribe is also interesting and unique just like the Karamojong tribe hence offering you with interesting experiences of the history, cultural performances, traditional dress code, traditional dishes among others on your safari in Uganda.
